INEC suspends declaration of Anambra Governorship election result

  The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the collation of results for the Anambra State governorship election and also suspended the declaration of the result of the election.   INEC’s Chief Returning Officer for the election, Professor Florence Obi, announced this early on Monday, November 8, at the commission’s head office in Awka. People had waited until about 12:15am on Nov. 8 for the declaration of a winner but things took a turn as Professor Obi made the announcement.   Professor Florence Obi, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar in Cross River State, said: "We have collated results from 20 out of 21 local government areas."   Rather than declaring the winner of the election after announcing the total votes scored by the participating parties, Professor Obi said a declaration would only be made after a supplementary election was conducted in Ihiala local government, which is the only local government in Anambra where e

EndSARS Anniversary protest: 34 suspects arrested and arraigned

  The Lagos state police command says 34 hoodlums who were arrested at the EndSARS anniversary protest in the state on Wednesday, October 20, have been arraigned.   A statement by CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, spokesperson of the state police command, says the planned protest in commemoration of the one-year anniversary of ENDSARS was carried out by protesters who moved in a motorcade through the Lekki toll gate at about 0800hrs. They ended the protest at about 10am.  He said at about 1130hrs after the real protesters had left peacefully without any confrontation, "hoodlums took advantage of the gridlock with criminal intention to start attacking innocent law-abiding citizens. Ajisebutu said one Shina Edun 'm', of Man O' War Nigeria attached to the Lekki Concession Company was stabbed in the stomach by the hoodlums. Lai Mohammed backs Malami on declaration of 'state of emergency' in Anambra

  Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has backed Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami on threats of declaring a state of emergency in Anambra state over recent attacks.    Malami had told journalists on Wednesday October 6 that declaring a state of emergency would ensure that the November 6 governorship election in the state takes place. Lai Mohammed has now backed Malami, saying it will help to avert a “constitutional crisis” in the state.   Mohammed told newsmen   “In the last couple of weeks, IPOB had imposed sit-at-home on the citizens. Sanwo-Olu signs new law prohibiting media parade of suspect by police

  The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday, October 5, signed the Administration of Criminal Justice (Amendment) Law (ACJL) 2021.   The ACJL was first passed in Lagos State in 2007 and amended in 2011 to ensure the fundamental rights of suspects and persons that come into contact with the justice system, as enshrined in the constitution are protected. The provisions in the new law include conducting criminal proceedings through audio and video conferencing platform, powers of Chief Magistrate to visit Police Stations, prohibition of media parade of suspects, compensation to victims of crime, protective measures for victims and witnesses, as well as the establishment of a Crime Data Register and the Criminal Justice Sector Reform Committee to monitor the implementation of this Law.   The Ministry of Justice through a collaborative effort with stakeholders in the administration of criminal justice will ensure the provisions of this law are enforced.
